After the birth of his daughter Jack Radcliffe (like most parents) felt moved to document her growth. His photos aren't limited to the typical first bike ride and her first holidays spent swathed in crinoline dresses. He wanted to see everything. He wanted to remember Alison sulking with Siouxse Sioux-esque eye make and even documented the first time he caught her smoking. He wasn't afraid to capture her after she'd shaved her head. Or if he was afraid he used photography to confront those moments when being a parent was a little scary. My own mother would have kept a hat on me had I ever shorn my own hair off. But Radcliffe was interested in the journey his daughter embarked on finding herself. Unlike a usual family photo album Radcliffe sought the truth of her emotional growth into an adult.
I can't help but listen to Alison by Slowdive right now.

I have seen the all the photos he took of his daughter. It is truly a journey of a troubled daughter's life since I think (if I remember correctly) she was manic depressive.
I shaved my head when I was 19 and wore it with long bangs. Yep, I was gothic. :)
One of the most "freeing" feeling things I ever did.
wow, this is awesome.
wow, this is inspiring. thanks for posting; i'm totally going to check out more.

wow, these are wonderfully evocative and really tell a story all girls can relate to. (Even if we weren't allowed to wear that much lipstick...)
thanks for pointing this out, definitely a fascinating portature of a young girls development into a woman. really amazing.
Wow, these pictures are wonderful, I really wish my parents are taken more pictures, or at least documented us kids, not just at birthdays and when we were happy, but when were other moods, as well.

what a fascinating photo collection. for two minutes there, i became intensely embroiled in this girls' life. THATS good photography
This is such a lovely story!
And I like the idea that Jack Radcliff was totally unphased by his daughter's growing up; find it interesting that he wanted to document is rather than try and control it.
Great pictures too, she looks fantastic was moody!
Your blog is so truely inspirational . .
Susuana Cole - My parents didn't take many interesting photos either but my granpa did. I have alot of his photos of my mom and her sisters and other relatives.
Discothequechic - "..find it interesting that he wanted to document it rather than try and control it."
Very interesting thought. It didn't cross my mind in that manner.
Molly - True. That is a sign of good photography.
lovely, thanks for posting up...I had a shaved head too, from 15-19, of course things like that don't stick out too much when you live in nYc but you know, it was still liberating as hell for a girl who loved ciggies, Sinead, and boys with make up.
Muse on, great stuff you have goin' here Darlin'!
this is perfect x
these images are so powerful in their simplicity.. and the story behind it is just as wonderful. Imagine having something like this to look back on. Amazing.
