Going to See the Riverman...

Alexander Wang's resort collection muse was a girl who decided to get on a boat and let the sea take her anywhere. The pieces are all functional for a sailing woman. A long john onesie to keep warm, a shorts version for hot weather, a scarf and poncho are much needed. The simple silk dresses could work as night gowns and be worn the next day (if your a dirty hippie like me). Also, an all purpose little black jacket is quintessential. The blue drip dye dress is like that lovely keepsake that you don't really need but makes you feel so beautiful you can't live without it. It could come in handy for dressing up once she docks someplace.

Personally, I think the collection is a bit plain. Perhaps I would have taken the perspective from a girl just setting sail to one who is returning home. With her she has a collection of ethnic clothes and jewelry from her travels. Her clothes would be totally beat up from all her adventures. I think most of the pieces could look pretty fierce on the street with some rock n' roll and bohemian touches. The long john pieces would be great for a grunge look.

Looking at this collection I can't help but imagine myself drinking tea and watching the sea. I'd have books with me of course and journals with blank pages. I'd have to find some way to rig up my turntable and stereo. The journey wouldn't be close to perfect without Nick Drake.

How do velvet blazers, newspaper printed jeans, zebra boots, slouchy cardigans, metallic leggings and fedora's sound to you? If you said, "good" or "rock n' roll" you're thinking what I'm thinking.

Moussy's Fall/Winter 09 collection cites Debbie Harry, androgyny and rock n' roll street fashion as inspirations. The fittingly named Acid Rock looks like a time capsule of 80's punk and new wave looks. Most of the pices come in several bright colors as well as reliable black and grey. In these clothes you'll look like a Paul Hartnett Photo come to life.

Diesel Black Gold

When Diesel created the Black Gold line they wanted to unite high end fashion and ready to wear. The result? Exactly that. Silky fabric and beaded details with grey denim for fall. Sexy and sophisticated yet rock. The men's collection had lots of layers (loose, grey tank tops over button ups, cardigans, vests). My favorite look had elements of both grunge and Jim Morisson: a baggy grey knit sweater with a zipper on the collar and leather pants. Grunge with a modern twist.

When it comes to wearing blue with denim, I can be a bit hesitant. Here in Diesel's Spring 2009 collection they perfected the look. I love the loose, bohemian feel of the tops paired with the jeans. And a waistcoat with a tank top had never been more rock n' roll. Rugged ankle boots, which are also in APC, Isabel Marant and PRPS collections, are here as well in natural leather and suede tones. As my regular readers know, I would love rock the men's collection as well as the women's.These are clothes I could see myself throwing in a suitcase and driving off on an adventure with. I can already picture my own jewelry, sweaters and shoes with them...

I think Black Gold is an appropriate name for this Diesel line. It's smooth, shiny, worth quite alot and dirty too.

It's Been A Long Time Comin'

Dear Readers,

I've been toying with the idea of creating a new blog. I would leave this one up of course. I couldn't bare to delete it (even if though there are old posts that I think could be re-written). Could you give me your two cents?

Do you think the name Pretty In Black suits my last few posts?

Have people come to my site expecting me to be a goth or monochrome black wearing punk?

Or do you recognize the name of the Raveonettes album and think that I'm just a music lover?

Inspiriation to put the two together

Turn, Turn, Turn...

Have you ever been afraid of your style changing? After you've identified yourself with a look and you start to feel like someone different it can be overwhelming. On Sunday when I realized that I put together an outfit with no black I panicked alittle. "Do I look too normal"? I wondered. Has wearing black become an mental obligation/uniform? Uniforms are dull and if I'm feeling something else I need to branch out. I'm discovering that pink is not evil. Dusty rose is actually a cool colour. Now, don't think that I'm going to be dressed head to toe in prep gear or ugg boots(I can't seem to shake my dirty hippie tendencies, nor do I want to). I'm feeling less androgyny and more pale colours with a Jennifer herrema kind of twist. I'm also loving the way some japanese women manage to wear feminine clothing without looking super sweet. It's more like a short, dusty rose chiffon dress with ripped jeans and fierce black pointy heels kind of thing (or quriky pointed flats). And there's got to be a dropwaist belt with some form of hardware on it. A true contradiction. Think Alison Mosshart at the Chloe fragrance launch.

To get a bit personal, this is due to me feeling less like brooding. I think I'm getting a better outlook.
