Keep On Your Mean Side.....

"Normally it takes us longer to put the artwork together than the actual recording of the record and we have to wade through roomfulls of photographs and paintings and scribbled rantings and collages made from napkins and matchbooks or whatever. So yeah, mostly we’ve been buried under a mountain of art junk, trying to condense it into a booklet."

"We wrote and wrote until the music sounded ugly to us. That was the moment we felt like we were on to something. "

"Jamie was messing around with the MPC 60 for the first time, so it was cool what he came up with naively. Usually to be naive is a great thing ‘cause you come up with stranger stuff."

"The internet changed all that. It took all the secrets and myths away and turned everything into gossip.....There's not any room for myth building or word of mouth anymore."

Just Look Into Her False Colored Eyes....

I saw this woman outside of the mall a few weeks ago. I couldn't help but notice her interesting attire and Forever21 bags full to the brim.

Drawing by Me

Me: Excuse me ma'am, that's a lovely coat!

Old Woman: Thankyou! I got it for five dollars! Its not even real. There's a hole in the pocket.

Me: What a steal! It's fabulous.

Old Woman: I got it at a great flea market.

If I didn't know my history I might have thought I was speaking to Edie Sedgwick.

Did Someone Call a Doctor?

Hedi Slimane

Even though Dr. Martens are sold at Hot Topic, the first chapter of their story isn't exactly fashionable. When German doctor Klaus Meartens damaged his foot skiing in the alps his good old's boots were no good. During his recovery he customized a pair of boots to cushion his injured foot and decided that he'd had goldmine. It took two years for the air cushioned boots to take off in 1947. Housewives over forty were his usual customers. Eventually mass sales led to the the first Dr. Martens shoe factory and then international marketing. Dr. Martens did not enter England (where most people know them from punk and skinhead subcultures) until 1960. The cherry red, 8 eyelet style was embraced by workman and police officers first. Later in the decade Skinheads began wearing them and in the punk explosion of the 7o's they're popularity amongst subversive youth grew. Dr. Martens joined the ranks of other forms of work wear (t-shirts and denim) to become fashionable. They've even been on the runway recently (Gareth Pugh, Chloe, Yohji Yamamoto)and come in a multitude of styles and colors. I'm feeling a bit partial to the floral pair.

I've Been Tagged!

Yes, Roller Girl tagged me (if anyone else has and I've forgotten about it let me know!) I've included one of my favorite photo's and some random and hopefully entertaining things about me.

1. Purple has been my favorite color for my entire life. My room was 90% purple when I was a kid -- carpet, bed, chair, walls.
2. I love fries. You just don't even know... And meat scares me.....but I love fish! I could never turn down eel sushi.

3. I eat ice cream out of the container and put it back in the freezer without telling anyone....

4. When I was small I was very much into acting. I never took classes. I could mimic Lucy from Peanuts running in a circle yelling "I've got dog germs!" among other things. A talent agent wanted to sign me when I was maybe 4 but my parents didn't pursue it.

5. After I found out that Luke Skywalker and Leia were siblings I moved on to liking Hon Solo. I was five years old.

6. In kindergarten I had a crush on a boy who could build bridges across the room with building blocks. I was intrigued by his architectural abilities.

I Look Just Like Buddy Holly

April77 have proven that any geek can become truly chic without losing an ounce of quirkiness. Here it even becomes alluring. For this sunnier season they've created a men's collection that embodies a surf rock era feel (biker jacket and picnic plaid shirt anyone?) Notice the way he pensivly chews on his glasses or the way he buttons his sleeves in such a suave motion. Even with the addition of a biker jacket he can't shake that dorkiness that got your attention.

On the other hand, the woman this season contrasts her counterpart. Native American prints and androgynous looks show her freer aestetic with the incorporation of things that could very well be her boyfriends. Even in a pencil skirt, cardigan and button down, quintessential 50's school attire, she looks downright bad and ready to cut class. She probably took that long, oversized tuxedo jacket without asking as well as that perfect grey vest. The fringed cowboy pants might sound like a disaster but the fringes are understated enough to have me transfixed.

Thanks to April77 you could look just like Buddy Holly (or Rivers Cuomo or Kurt Cobain) this season. They're all cool cats as far as I'm concerned.
